Laker Girls Biography

Ah yes, it was time for Laker Girl auditions.
Every year in July, the chance to join one of the most iconic NBA dance teams entices several hundred southern California beauties to put themselves through several grueling rounds of dance auditions and interviews.

So why do it?
Besides the fame, glory and courtside seats to the Lake Show that is.
For former Laker Girl Aisha Francis, making the team jump started her career. She was looking for a way to get to LA and dance. While working at a radio station, she heard a commercial advertising auditions. Not only did she earn a spot on the team, but was able to relocate and start her current career as a professional dancer and choreographer.

"It was the highlight of starting out my dance career," said Francis. "I had the best two years of my life. I got to travel to different countries and wear the cute little outfits and do a lot of charity work which was awesome."

Oh, and she witnessed Lakers 2001 and 2002 NBA titles.

Current Laker girls Teresa and Natasha are both hoping for a spot on the team for the second year in a row. What brought them back this year was the chance to build not only on the memories, but the skills they developed over the past year.

"I think the biggest thing I've learned is time management. With this job, you have to really allot yourself a lot of time to being prepared and to show up on time," said Natasha. "I've learned that not everyone can wait for you if you are 15 minutes late. Sometimes that means you're fired."

Someone who knows plenty about the benefits of the NBA cheer experience is Ari Waller. She spent three years with the Sacramento Kings and a year with the Boston Celtics. The apparent conflict of interest couldn't keep her away from trying to be a Laker Girl.

"You're always going to miss the fans. You're always going to miss the energy and meeting other girls," said Waller, who admitted that trying to come and do it again after taking a break isn't exactly the easiest task."But it's always exciting to give another try. I always say to go for it and see what happens."

Morgan Harris ran into a few Laker Girls growing up dancing and going to school in Orange County. Trying out herself one day eventually earned a spot on her bucket list.

"I think it's a great team. I love the Lakers. I think it would be very fun to cheer them on. I have some really good friends who are current Laker girls and I think it would be a really fun experience."

Being a Laker Girl has definitely had a positive impact on my life. Aside from the personal growths in punctuality, health, fitness and confidence…..this job helps to teach me, to be humble. We are so fortunate to get out into the community and meet fans from all walks of life! I feel so grateful to have the opportunity to do be a part of it. Many people turn to us for inspiration, but it is those fans that truly inspire me.

Yes it has! I am so lucky to work with my teammates, who I loved getting to know this year. These girls motivate me daily to be the best person that I can be. I also enjoy going out into the community and meeting our Lakers fans! We also have the opportunity to attend various charity events throughout Los Angeles…..it's nice to see first-hand, what non-profit organizations & foundations do, to make a difference in other people's lives. It is so inspiring!
